Caring for Your Investment: The Millers Tale Guide

At Millers Tale, we believe in clothing that carries a story. Our pieces are crafted from the finest natural fibres - merino wool, cashmere, and traditional British woollens - designed to be cherished for decades, not just seasons.

Because we use pure, natural materials, a little mindful care goes a long way in preserving the character and softness of your favourite garments.

  • Wool is a miracle fibre; it is naturally anti-bacterial and odour-resistant, meaning it requires far less washing than synthetic alternatives.

    • Airing Out: Often, all your knitwear needs is a breath of fresh air. Hang your garment in a breezy spot or a steamy bathroom to naturally release creases and lift away odours.

    • Resting: To maintain the shape of your woollens, avoid wearing the same piece two days in a row. Giving the fibres 24 hours to "spring back" ensures the garment holds its tailored fit.

  • When it is time for a deeper clean, gentle handling is key to preventing shrinkage and maintaining the delicate loft of the wool.

    • Hand Wash Recommended: We suggest a cool hand wash (no higher than 30°C) using a specialist wool or cashmere shampoo.

    • Never Wring: Gently squeeze the water through the garment, but avoid twisting or wringing, as this can distort the delicate knit.

    • Spot Treatment: For small marks, spot cleaning with cold water and a mild wool soap is often more effective and gentler than a full wash.

  • The most critical stage of wool care is the drying process.

    • Flat Dry Only: Never hang wet woollen knitwear, as the weight of the water will stretch the shoulders. Instead, lay your garment flat on a clean towel, gently easing it back into its original shape.

    • Away from Heat: Allow to dry naturally. Keep away from direct sunlight, radiators, or tumble dryers, which can cause fibres to become brittle or shrink.

    • Pilling: It is a natural characteristic of high-quality natural wool for small ‘pills’ to form in areas of friction. These are easily removed with a wool comb or a fabric shaver, restoring the smooth finish.

    • Folding: Always store your knitwear folded flat in a drawer. Hanging woollen sweaters can cause hanger marks and permanent stretching.

    • Seasonal Protection: When stowing your woollens away for the summer, ensure they are clean (moths are attracted to natural oils) and store them in breathable cotton bags with cedarwood or lavender to keep them pristine.
